FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A measles outbreak in the southwestern United States has infected 228 people, with health authorities warning that the number is expected to rise.

Texas has reported 198 cases, while neighboring New Mexico has confirmed 30, according to the Ritzau news agency. Two fatalities have been recorded—one in each state.

In Texas, the victim was a school-age child, while in New Mexico, an adult tested positive for measles posthumously. Neither individual had been vaccinated against the disease.

Health officials are urging the public to ensure vaccinations are up to date, as measles is highly contagious and can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia and brain inflammation.
