Steps are being taken to prevent electrical energy shortages in Cyprus due to the impending cold weather wave starting today.

Haravgi newspaper reports that Hara Kusiappa, the Press Spokesperson for the Electricity Transport System Administration, stated that the cold weather will lead to increased electricity consumption, potentially causing a challenging situation.

She expressed hope that everything will go smoothly and reassured that the situation is being constantly monitored.

Kusiappa mentioned that they are in continuous contact with the Electricity Authority, urging the repair of existing faults in some units before the cold weather hits, to contribute to the grid.

The most critical period is the three hours between 18:00 and 21:00, when renewable energy sources can’t support the grid. She advised consumers to minimize electricity usage during this time to avoid power cuts.

Kusiappa also warned of possible rotating power outages due to unusual consumption levels and touched on the electricity exchange with the north. She noted that electricity automatically flows from the north during peak hours because of the interconnected system, ensuring an automatic energy flow in case of faults.
