Cyprus’ representative to the Committee on Missing Persons says excavations are under way at several sites across the island in the search for people who disappeared in 1974.

Leonidas Pantelides told a news conference at the Archbishopric that work is taking place in Kato Deryneia, Ayios Memnonas — where 12 missing women and children are believed to be buried — as well as in a military area in Karavas, and in Ambelikou, Lapithos, Syrianochori, Galateia in Karpasia and in Strovolos.

Presidential Commissioner Marios Hartsiotis said the government has secured €1 million for specialised genetic testing using advanced methodology to support identification efforts.

Archbishop Georgios said the annual Marathon of Love for the Missing helps keep public awareness alive and increases pressure on Turkey to cooperate meaningfully in resolving what he called a tragic humanitarian issue.
