A Norwegian man appears to be cured of HIV four years after receiving a bone marrow transplant, reports VG.

Professor Marius Trøseid, from the Department of Internal Medicine Research and consultant at Rikshospitalet, confirmed there is no sign of residual virus in the man.

Trøseid, who has led the project along with consultant Anders Myhre, has been researching HIV for 15 years and calls this a major breakthrough in HIV research.

“I haven’t been involved in anything bigger,” Trøseid said.

The so-called “Oslo patient” is the first person in Norway and Scandinavia to appear cured of HIV following a blood stem cell transplant. According to Trøseid, only a handful of people worldwide have been definitively cured of HIV.
