FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Last night’s attack on a 23-year-old delivery driver in Limassol is part of a troubling trend of violence against delivery drivers in Cyprus.
This incident, involving a gang of 20 motorcyclists armed with knives and bats, highlights the vulnerability of these essential workers. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case.
In February, a 28-year-old foreign delivery driver was assaulted by six individuals in Kiti.
The attackers threw him to the ground and stole his motorcycle and phone. Such incidents have sparked protests demanding better protection for delivery drivers, who often face unsafe working conditions and, in some cases, racially motivated attacks.
These repeated assaults underscore the urgent need for action.
Employers must prioritize safety measures, such as providing GPS trackers and emergency response tools. Law enforcement should increase patrols in high-risk areas and impose stricter penalties on perpetrators.
Additionally, society must address underlying issues like racism and xenophobia to create a safer environment for all workers.
