FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Japan’s government has warned of an 80% probability of a massive earthquake occurring off the southeast coast within the next 30 years.
According to a newly released report, a magnitude 9 quake could result in catastrophic losses, with up to 1.23 million people requiring evacuation — nearly 1% of Japan’s total population.
The report outlines grim worst-case scenarios, including the potential deaths of up to 300,000 people from tsunamis and collapsing buildings, particularly if the quake strikes late at night or in winter.
The findings have sparked nationwide discussions on preparedness and disaster resilience in a country prone to seismic activity
