FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – With Easter approaching, Cyprus police have launched a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of fireworks and firecrackers, aiming to prevent their use, possession, and trade during the holiday season.
Authorities are emphasizing the critical role of public awareness and collaboration with relevant organizations to combat this dangerous and illegal practice.
The ongoing campaign seeks to inform citizens—particularly young people—about the risks associated with firecrackers, including serious injuries to themselves and others.
Police are also engaging shop owners, including those selling hunting supplies, kiosks, and stores, to remind them of their legal responsibilities under existing legislation.
In parallel, law enforcement efforts are intensifying to identify and arrest individuals involved in the illegal import, possession, sale, or manufacture of firecrackers or similar explosive materials.
During Holy Week, police patrols will be increased, particularly around churches, culminating with the Good Friday processions and Easter celebrations.
Officers will monitor major urban and rural areas to ensure public safety.
Authorities highlight tragic cases where individuals have suffered burns, amputations, and even loss of life due to these dangerous explosives. “Firecrackers are not toys or traditions—they are explosive devices that injure or kill,” the police warn.
