Cyprus police are investigating a new case of online fraud after a Nicosia resident reported that nearly €3,000 was taken from her bank account, authorities said Sunday.

According to the complaint filed with the Nicosia CID, the woman received a phone call on 26 May from a suspicious female caller who spoke English with an Asian accent. The caller claimed to be an employee of an online financial services platform and used false security warnings to convince the victim to install a specific mobile application.

Once installed, the app gave the scammer remote access to the woman’s phone and online banking accounts, allowing her to withdraw €2,992.

Police urged the public to exercise extreme caution, stressing that no one should ever be given access to personal devices or online accounts and that personal and banking information must never be disclosed.

Authorities advised citizens to verify any calls or messages through the official communication channels of the organisations involved.
