29‑Year‑Old Arrested After Attacking Police in Famagusta District

Cyprus police arrested a 29‑year‑old man on Friday after he allegedly attacked officers who attempted to detain him in a Famagusta district village, authorities said.

According to police, officers from the Xylofagou and Xylotymvou stations went to the area around 5:30 p.m. to execute an outstanding arrest warrant for the man, who had failed to appear in court in ongoing cases. They found him outside his home holding a knife and a box cutter.

Police said the man refused to cooperate and assaulted the officers, causing scratches mainly to their arms. Despite his resistance, he was subdued and arrested both for the new offenses and the pending warrant. He was taken into custody.

The injured officers were treated at Famagusta General Hospital and discharged.

The Xylofagou Police Station is continuing the investigation.
