Cyprus police intensified patrols and inspections across all districts on Saturday as part of efforts to prevent the use of firecrackers, the lighting of bonfires and other forms of youth delinquency.

Throughout the day, police patrols, working with the Fire Service, inspected numerous bonfire sites and open areas where large amounts of wood had been gathered. Wood and other hazardous materials were removed in cooperation with local authorities.

During the night, police responded to a high number of incidents involving fires and firecracker use.

In Nicosia, officers responding to burning rubbish bins in Latsia came under stone‑throwing by youths, causing damage to a patrol car window. Around 6 a.m., during a check on a group of youths in Strovolos, police arrested a 16‑year‑old on charges of public insult, causing a disturbance and resisting arrest.

In Paphos, police are investigating the circumstances under which an 11‑year‑old was injured by a firecracker. The child was taken to Paphos General Hospital with a laceration to the right palm and was discharged after receiving first aid.

In Limassol, officers arrested two minors, aged 15 and 16, after finding a total of 30 firecrackers in their possession.

Police said operations will continue with the aim of preventing dangerous behaviour and ensuring public safety.
