Portuguese energy company Galp has finished installing a green hydrogen production unit at its Sines refinery, marking a major step in the country’s push toward cleaner industrial energy.
The facility consists of ten electrolysis modules with a combined capacity of 100 megawatts at the coastal refinery south of Lisbon. Galp said the project strengthens Portugal’s position as a key player in Europe’s energy transition.
The unit is expected to reach full operation in the second half of the year, producing up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually. The output will replace about 20 percent of the gray hydrogen currently used in refinery processes.
Galp said the shift is projected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 110,000 tonnes per year in scope 1 and 2 carbon‑dioxide‑equivalent emissions.
