A woman in the 35th week of pregnancy was urgently transferred to Israel on Wednesday night to ensure a safe delivery, health officials said.

Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) Services Director Monica Kyriakou said the air transfer was necessary because the baby will require surgery immediately after birth.

Kyriakou noted that since the HIO assumed responsibility for sending patients abroad, 27 cases have required air evacuation.

Ten of those were treated as life‑threatening emergencies and were completed within a matter of hours, she said.

Most serious cases needing rapid intervention are sent to Israel, Kyriakou added, as it is the closest country to Cyprus with the required specialised facilities.
