President Donald Trump has issued a warning to Afghanistan, stating that failure to return control of Bagram Air Base to the United States could lead to “serious consequences.”
Trump said the U.S. is seeking to regain control of the base, which was used by American forces following the September 11, 2001 attacks.
He noted that one reason for the renewed interest is the base’s proximity to China—just an hour away.
The base was taken over by Taliban forces after the U.S. military withdrawal in 2021. Afghan officials have voiced opposition to any renewed American military presence.
