Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Foreign Ministry and the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Friday evening, responding to a call by the left-wing party AKEL and other organisations.

The protest condemned what participants described as an unprovoked police intervention during a previous demonstration and voiced support for the Palestinian people.

Chants were directed against the government of President Nikos Christodoulides, which organisers accused of aligning too closely with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Police maintained a discreet presence, and the protest concluded without incident.

In a speech at the rally, AKEL MP Aristos Damianou denounced the previous night’s events as “state violence and intimidation,” warning that if dissent is criminalised, Cyprus risks straying from democratic norms.

He also criticised legislation governing public gatherings and pledged that AKEL would continue to oppose it.

Organisers reiterated their accusations of subservience by the Cypriot government to Israel, citing its handling of recent protests and the Gaza flotilla.
