Russia’s railway network carried 1.3102 billion passenger trips in 2025, a 1.9 percent increase from the previous year, Russian Railways has said.
Suburban services accounted for the bulk of travel, with 1.1835 billion trips — up 2.2 percent year on year. Long‑distance travel slipped 0.6 percent to 126.7 million trips.
Freight activity moved in the opposite direction.
Total rail freight volume fell 5.6 percent to about 1.1158 billion tonnes.
Coal shipments reached 324.5 million tonnes, down 2.1 percent, while oil and oil‑product shipments dropped 5 percent to 197.1 million tonnes.
The company said freight loading was hit by external pressures, contributing to a 10.5 percent decline in bulk cargoes such as construction materials, ferrous metals and coal. Oil shipments were also reduced due to scheduled refinery maintenance.
