FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Police are investigating a scam targeting an elderly woman in a Larnaca district community, where suspects posed as government and utility officials to steal cash and jewelry.

According to a police statement issued Thursday, the woman received a phone call around 12:30 p.m. from an unknown female caller claiming the government was offering free domestic help for senior citizens.

The caller requested personal information to allegedly complete an application.

The woman was then transferred to a man who claimed to be an employee of the Electricity Authority.

He told her there was a leak in her home that could lead to a fire and instructed her to move all her money and jewelry outside to the veranda.

While still on the phone, the woman placed her valuables in a basket and left them outside.

The caller then urged her to go back inside and switch off the main power supply.

When she returned, the basket had vanished.

Witnesses reported seeing an unidentified man leaving the area on foot. The Kofinou Regional Police Station is continuing its investigation.

Authorities are once again urging the public to remain vigilant, warning that scammers are constantly devising new methods to deceive and steal from unsuspecting victims.
