Small 2.8-magnitude earthquake shakes Limassol, Cyprus

A 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Limassol, Cyprus, on Sunday.

The tremor was recorded at 1:07 p.m. local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface.

The event was initially reported by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the first seismological agency to file it.

Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was unlikely to have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Limassol is currently holding its annual carnival.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Gerasa, located 2 km from the epicenter.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pano Polemidia, located 13 km from the epicenter; Kato Polemidia, 14 km away; Germasogeia, 14 km away; Mouttagiaka, 15 km away; Ýpsonas, 15 km away; Limassol, 16 km away; and Sotira, 17 km away.
