FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — A powerful earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale was recorded late Monday night in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands region of India, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
Authorities did not issue a tsunami warning.
The quake struck at 12:12 a.m. local time Tuesday (21:42 Cyprus time) in the sea, roughly 259 kilometers northwest of Sambang in Indonesia’s Aceh province.
Aceh was among the hardest-hit areas in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 220,000 people across 15 countries.
