FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Pakistan issued a strong warning against any attempts by India to divert or block its share of water under the Indus Waters Treaty.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described water as a “vital national interest” and pledged a proportional response to any interference.

The treaty, signed in 1960 with World Bank mediation, allocates control over six rivers between the two nations.

Pakistan has accused India of undermining the accord with upstream projects in disputed regions.

Sharif recalled Pakistan’s “resolute” military response during the 2019 Pulwama crisis, emphasizing the country’s readiness to defend its sovereignty while reaffirming its commitment to dialogue and international norms.

Tensions escalated following a deadly attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir, with India accusing Pakistan of involvement.

Measures taken by India include suspending the treaty, closing borders, and expelling Pakistani personnel, further straining relations between the two neighbors.
