FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Thailand will conduct nationwide tests of its new emergency alert system next month, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has announced.
The system uses cell broadcast technology to send messages directly to mobile phones in targeted areas.
Messages will include a loud alert tone and bilingual on-screen text in Thai and English.
Tests will take place in three stages, ranging from small to large scale, the agency said.
A provincial-level drill will include Bangkok and four other areas.
The alert system, which complements existing SMS notifications, is part of efforts to modernize the country’s emergency warning infrastructure after tremors from a neighboring Myanmar earthquake last month caused concern.
