Thailand said Monday it will maintain military operations along its border with Cambodia until its sovereignty and territorial integrity are no longer compromised, following renewed clashes that have forced mass evacuations.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura told diplomats that air strikes against Cambodian positions were carried out in self-defense and stressed that all actions would remain proportionate, in line with international law, and directed solely at military targets.
“Thailand’s position will remain unchanged until Cambodia changes its stance and pursues the path of peace,” Nikorndej said.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, in a televised address after a National Security Council resolution, said Thailand would exercise its “legitimate right to self-defense” and conduct operations with prudence, adhering to humanitarian principles.
The fighting has triggered the evacuation of about 400,000 residents across four border provinces since Sunday night, officials said. More than 600 schools have been closed as a precaution.
According to the Thai Army, one soldier has been killed and 18 others injured in the escalating violence.
