FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The “Great Sea Interconnector” (GSI) project, aimed at connecting Cyprus and Greece via underwater cables, was excluded from the agenda during the recent meeting in Athens between President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Haravgi newspaper reported the project’s delay is due to continuous postponements of seabed research caused by the presence of Turkish ships in the area.

The Independent Electricity Transmission Operator of Greece (ADMIE) suspended payments to French company Nexans, responsible for the project, due to ongoing uncertainties.

Cypriot sources hinted the issue would be discussed in the Athens meeting, but Christodoulides confirmed it was not.

Alithia newspaper added that the project’s future remains unclear following ADMIE’s payment suspension and the departure of research vessels.

Decisions are now in the hands of diplomats, not technocrats.
