Cyprus is reportedly seeking to join the European Defense Industry initiative by specializing in research and development (R&D).

According to Kathimerini, President Nikos Christodoulides expressed optimism following Thursday’s extraordinary summit, where he committed funds to Europe’s defense industry and rearmament.

The proposals are expected to be discussed further at the next council meeting on March 20.

Christodoulides emphasized the importance of strengthening the defense industry through loans directed to European companies via member states.

He highlighted the potential of Cypriot companies to seize new opportunities and noted the recent establishment of the “Defense Industry Council” by the Cypriot administration.

While acknowledging that Cyprus’s contribution to European defense may not match that of larger nations, the administration aims to focus on high-tech spare parts and software, leveraging expertise and R&D within a cooperative European framework.

When asked about Türkiye’s potential involvement in the European Defense Industry, Christodoulides pointed to the decision text, which underscores the importance of security across all EU borders, not just the Eastern ones.

In a related analysis, Kathimerini explored the Turkish defense industry’s growing influence, describing it as a “battering ram” in geopolitical terms.

The article questioned whether Türkiye’s defense exports serve as a geopolitical tool or a strategy to secure a lasting role in the European defense structure.
