The trial of Phaedon Phaedonos, the suspended Mayor of Paphos, opened on Monday before the Permanent Criminal Court sitting in Paphos.
Mr Phaedonos, who has been on leave from his municipal duties since the charges were brought, has already entered a not guilty plea to all counts against him. The trial itself has been listed to run from 27 to 31 July.
Explaining the decision to close the proceedings, the court held that, given the nature of the alleged offences and the material contained in the file, there was a clear risk to the complainant’s privacy. Judges also cited concerns that publicity could influence her testimony, owing to fear, distress and the possibility of social stigma.
Mr Phaedonos had earlier failed in a bid before the Court of Appeal to have his suspension from office lifted for the duration of the proceedings, a request judges declined to grant.
The case is expected to continue through the week, with the court maintaining strict reporting restrictions throughout.
