FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – U.S. President Donald Trump surprised many on Monday by revealing plans for direct, high-level talks between the United States and Iran regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
The announcement, made during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, comes after months of heightened tensions, including U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil exports and threats of military action.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has previously ruled out direct talks under Trump’s “maximum pressure” policy.
Trump disclosed that a “very big meeting” involving senior officials is scheduled for Saturday, expressing hope for a successful outcome.
“It’s getting to be very dangerous territory, and hopefully, those talks will be successful,” he said, adding that a deal would be preferable to other, less desirable options.
Netanyahu, present at the announcement, expressed skepticism but acknowledged that halting Iran’s nuclear ambitions would be beneficial.
Iran has yet to confirm its participation in the talks.
