New US President Donald Trump plans to withdraw the country from the Paris climate agreement for the second time, the White House says.
The White House briefly announced the news in a press release after Trump was sworn in in Washington. No further details were given.
The veto is expected, as Trump also announced during his first term in 2017 that the United States would withdraw from the agreement.
Trump’s successor , Joe Biden , decided on his first day in the White House in 2021 that the United States would rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement.
UN climate chief Simon Stiell announced shortly after the White House announcement that the door would be kept open for the United States to return to the climate agreement in the future.
