President Donald Trump on Monday repeated his call for the United States to take control of Greenland, drawing fresh objections from Denmark and the European Union.
“We need Greenland for national security, not for minerals,” Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. He added that “they say Denmark owns it,” but claimed Denmark “has spent no money and has no military protection” for the island.
Denmark is legally responsible for Greenland’s defense and maintains military capabilities tied to the territory.
On Sunday, Trump named Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland.
“We have to have it, and he wanted to lead the charge,” Trump said.
