Turkey Sees Sharp Decline in August Rainfall, Southeast Hit Hardest

Rainfall across Turkey in August fell significantly below seasonal norms and last year’s levels.

The national average for August 2025 was 7.9 kilograms per square meter, compared to 13.9 kilograms in August 2024 and a long-term average of 14.8 kilograms recorded between 1991 and 2020.

This marks a 47 percent drop from the seasonal norm and a 43 percent decrease from the previous year.

The most dramatic decline occurred in the Southeastern Anatolia region, where rainfall was 76 percent below average.

Several provinces—including parts of Istanbul, Çanakkale, İzmir, Antalya, and Mersin—saw reductions exceeding 80 percent. Central and Western Black Sea regions, along with Eastern Anatolia, also experienced steep declines.

In contrast, localized increases were observed in parts of Afyonkarahisar, Denizli, Konya, Niğde, Nevşehir, Aksaray, and Karaman, where rainfall rose more than 60 percent above normal.

Despite these pockets of increase, all regions received less precipitation than their long-term averages, raising concerns about drought conditions and water resource management heading into the autumn.
