Two separate early‑morning house fires caused by lit candles damaged homes in Kato Polemidia and Livadia on Monday, authorities said.
The first fire broke out shortly before 5:30 a.m. in the kitchen of a two‑storey house in Livadia. Two residents inhaled smoke and were taken to hospital. The blaze started from a candle left on the kitchen counter and caused extensive damage to appliances, equipment and the home’s electrical installation.
Earlier, a similar fire occurred in the kitchen of a two‑storey house in Kato Polemidia, also traced to a lit candle. The occupants noticed the fire in time, evacuated the home and were unharmed. That fire likewise damaged electrical appliances, equipment and wiring.
Fire‑service investigations are ongoing.
