UN Special Representative Briefs Diplomats on Cyprus Geneva Conference Outcomes

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Colin Stewart, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus, updated diplomats on the outcomes of the recent Geneva Conference, according to a UN post on X.

The briefing covered the UN’s activities and the current situation in Cyprus following the informal meeting led by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Stewart highlighted key initiatives announced in Geneva, including the creation of a Technical Committee on Youth, plans for new crossings, demining efforts, and collaborative measures addressing environmental concerns, solar energy, and cemetery restoration.

He praised the positive steps taken, such as the decision to appoint a personal envoy and schedule another meeting in late July.

Additionally, Stewart provided insights into the buffer zone’s status and emphasized the ongoing work of the twelve technical committees focused on fostering cooperation and addressing shared challenges on the island.
