Warning message at Akrotiri bases found to be false alarm, Cyprus says

Residents near the Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area received a late‑night alert on their mobile phones Wednesday warning of a potential threat, prompting sirens to sound across the district, according to local reports.

State broadcaster RIK said the message was issued at 10:44 p.m. by the British Bases. The alert triggered security protocols and the activation of warning sirens.

Cyprus government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said no threat was identified. He said the measures were taken as a precaution and that checks carried out overnight found no incident.

Authorities said the alert has since been lifted, and security services continue to monitor the situation under standard procedures.
