Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi met Saturday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, with both sides stressing their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

El-Sissi praised what he called steady growth in political, economic and commercial ties and highlighted major joint projects, including the Russian industrial zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the Dabaa nuclear power plant.

Lavrov said Russia aims to build on understandings reached during el-Sissi’s visit to Moscow in May to expand bilateral cooperation, the statement said.

The talks also covered the Second Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, held Saturday in Cairo, which both sides described as an important platform for deepening economic and political ties.

Regional issues were reviewed as well, including the conflicts in Gaza, Sudan and Libya. Both sides called for ending the war in Gaza, consolidating the cease-fire and preventing further escalation. Lavrov also praised Egypt’s role in supporting regional stability.

El-Sissi reiterated Egypt’s support for political solutions to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to the statement.
