The Swiss Football Association has chosen Cyprus as the site for its referees’ winter training camp, marking the first time in 35 years it has changed its traditional preparation venue, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism said.
Around 100 Swiss referees are training on the island, including UEFA Elite officials who oversee top‑tier competitions such as the Champions League.
During the visit, the Deputy Ministry hosted an official dinner on Jan. 7 for the Swiss delegation, attended by representatives of the Swiss and Cypriot football federations.
The visit was organized under the ministry’s grant scheme aimed at attracting foreign sports teams and federations for winter training. More than 100 teams and federations made use of the scheme in 2025.
Deputy Tourism Minister Kostas Koumis said the decision by the Swiss federation strengthens Cyprus’ position as a quality sports‑tourism destination. He expressed hope that the cooperation would develop into a long‑term partnership, noting that Cyprus offers favorable winter conditions and high‑level training facilities.
