A major multinational military exercise known as “Arctic Endurance” has begun in Greenland and will continue through the end of 2026.
Soldiers from several NATO member states — including France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, Iceland and Belgium — have been in Greenland over the past few weeks conducting preparatory work for the drills. Other alliance members have expressed interest in sending reconnaissance teams.
The exercise is intended to strengthen NATO’s operational capabilities and cohesion in the Arctic, an area of growing strategic focus for the alliance.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is a self‑governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, though Copenhagen retains responsibility for foreign affairs and defense.
Since returning to office in 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced interest in “obtaining” Greenland, a notion firmly rejected by Danish and Greenlandic leaders.
