British Bases officials say their Chinook helicopter crews are prepared for the summer firefighting season after taking part in a Republic of Cyprus–led exercise.
The RAF Akrotiri–based team from 1310 Flight completed its annual training on May 1 and put those skills into practice during Exercise Ifestos last week.
Squadron Leader Joel Babbage, the unit’s commanding officer, said the drill was essential for improving cooperation with Cypriot authorities.
“The exercise provided a realistic environment to integrate procedures, communications and tactical coordination with partner forces,” he said, adding that working alongside Republic of Cyprus units improved understanding of each other’s capabilities.
As the fire season begins, Bases officials say a Chinook will remain on standby throughout the summer. Babbage described the aircraft as well‑suited to the role, citing its heavy‑lift capacity, performance in high temperatures and the operational experience of its crews.
He said the combination of power, precision flying and load‑handling skills makes the Chinook “a reliable and highly effective platform” for aerial firefighting.
