Two drivers involved in separate traffic collisions in the Nicosia district tested positive for driving under the influence of alcohol, with readings of 139 micrograms and 82 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath, police said Sunday.
Both were arrested for investigative purposes. A third driver involved in a crash in the Famagusta district refused to take a breathalyzer test and was arrested, with police suspending her driver’s license.
The first collision occurred around 5 p.m. Saturday when a 43-year-old truck driver lost control of his vehicle under circumstances still under investigation. The truck veered off course and struck a fence and the wall of a house on the right side of the road in the Nicosia district, police said. The crash also damaged a parking area at a neighboring residence.
Nicosia Traffic Department officers who responded to the scene administered a breath test to the 43-year-old driver, which showed a reading of 139 micrograms — far above the legal limit of 22. He was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and taken into custody for further questioning. The Nicosia Traffic Department is continuing the investigation.
A second collision in the Nicosia district occurred just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday under circumstances still being investigated, when a car driven by a 50-year-old man collided with a car driven by a 40-year-old man.
Officers from the local Peristerona Police Station and the Morphou Traffic Department responded to the scene. Both drivers were given breath tests; the 50-year-old tested positive with a reading of 82 micrograms, exceeding the legal limit of 22, and was arrested for investigative purposes. The Peristerona Police Station is continuing the investigation.
In the Famagusta district, on a road in the Protaras area of Paralimni, a car driven by a 43-year-old woman collided with a car driven by a 42-year-old man around 8 p.m. Saturday under circumstances still under investigation.
Police who responded to the scene gave the 42-year-old driver a breath test, which returned a zero reading. The 43-year-old woman, who showed signs of intoxication, refused to provide a breath sample and was arrested for investigative purposes. Police also suspended her driver’s license.
She was taken to the Paralimni Police Station, where she was also arrested on an in-flagrante charge of causing a public disturbance.
She was released from custody shortly before 11:30 p.m. and will be summoned to appear in court at a later date.
The Paralimni Police Station is continuing the investigation.
