The Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre hosted 5,200 students since September, delivering key environmental programs to primary and secondary schools across Cyprus.
Centre manager Dr. Thomas Hadjikyriakou said the year was “very productive,” noting 160 school visits coordinated with the Unit for Education for the Environment and Sustainable Development. He said the programmes helped students and teachers engage with ecological and cultural issues in a real‑world setting.
Each visit includes a story about the formation of the Akrotiri Peninsula, the significance of turtle‑nesting beaches and the wetlands. Students then explore exhibition areas through an interactive QR‑code game, watch a film on the peninsula’s ecological value, observe birds at the Salt Lake and use the outdoor play area.
EESD teacher Koula Michael said the centre operates daily with groups from all districts, offering activities for students aged five to 18 and university visitors. She said the aim is to help young people interact with the peninsula’s natural environment and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
Popular programmes this year included “Magic – Nature – Senses” for younger pupils and, for secondary students, basket‑making in Akrotiri village, wetlands conservation, reducing ecological footprints and learning how the centre operates.
