Academics from universities in Cyprus have issued a joint statement condemning what they describe as genocide in Gaza, calling for an end to Israeli military actions and international support for Palestinian rights.

The statement, reported by Haravgi newspaper, accuses Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians with backing from the European Union, the United States, and NATO.

The academics urged the Cypriot government to sever ties with Israel and oppose alleged plans for the full occupation of Gaza.

The scholars also called for an immediate end to the blockade and the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid to the region.

Separately, Palestinian Ambassador to Cyprus Abdallah Attari met with AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou, thanking the party for its continued support of Palestine.

Stefanou reaffirmed AKEL’s stance, citing international law and UN resolutions, and drew parallels between Israel’s actions in Gaza and Türkiye’s policies in Cyprus.
