FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Anti-war activists have hitched up a fake signpost near Akrotiri airbase, renaming them “Genocide Bases” to highlight Britain’s military involvement in the ongoing Gaza conflict.
The groups claim that two planes departed the base for Gaza as of Tuesday.
In a joint Instagram post, several anti-war groups accused the Royal Air Force of conducting reconnaissance flights over Gaza since the war began.
They also alleged the base has been used for military cargo flights to Israel and U.S. special forces missions, describing it as a key supporter of what they called “Israel’s war crimes.”
In an interview with the Famagusta Gazette last week, British lawmaker Jeremy Corbyn criticized the role of U.K. military bases in Cyprus, including Akrotiri, in supporting conflicts in the region.
Corbyn called for the removal of the bases, arguing they position Cyprus as a facilitator of military actions in Gaza.
He also called for transparency, emphasizing that any surveillance data gathered from these bases should be submitted to the International Criminal Court for review. Corbyn described the bases as an “anomaly” in an independent Cyprus.
