NICOSIA — Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas defended the government’s decision to purchase an air defense system from Israel, calling it “a reasonable action to protect its citizens,” according to Haravgi newspaper.

In a statement, Palmas addressed criticism from Turkey and emphasized Cyprus’s right to strengthen its defense.

“As a peaceful EU member state under military occupation, Cyprus has a duty to enhance its security and deterrence capabilities,” he said, describing the move as “a reasonable obligation.”

Palmas also commented on Israel’s military actions against Palestinians, stating that Cyprus has “repeatedly condemned” the violence and expressed support for the Palestinian people.

He added, “Political cooperation and a country’s strategic orientation are one thing; humanitarian issues are another.”
