Cyprus police have wrapped up a weeklong nationwide enforcement campaign targeting the use of seat belts and child safety seats, part of an effort to reduce serious and fatal injuries in road collisions.

The operation, which ran from March 9 to March 15, focused on ensuring that drivers and passengers used seat belts in both front and rear seats. Officers also carried out checks on the proper use of child seats and booster seats.

The campaign was conducted in parallel with a Europe‑wide initiative coordinated through ROADPOL, the European Traffic Police Network.

Police reiterated that seat belts remain the most effective safety feature in vehicles. An analysis of data from 2022 to 2024 shows that 50.9% of drivers and passengers killed in road crashes in Cyprus were not wearing a seat belt.

Authorities said the results of the campaign will be evaluated in the coming days, with further targeted operations expected throughout the year.
