Culling animals on infected farms is a necessary step to contain foot‑and‑mouth disease, scientists and veterinary officials said at a press briefing, noting that even asymptomatic animals can transmit the virus and fuel uncontrolled spread.

Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou announced the creation of a Scientific Advisory Committee to guide the government’s response. The panel will include seven leading scientists and academics.

Its role will be to provide scientific direction and submit recommendations to the minister on managing the epidemiological situation.

Panayiotou also highlighted ongoing efforts at the European level to ensure Cyprus’ specific circumstances are taken into account, including the possibility of securing exemptions from strict culling protocols.
