FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Federation of Environmental Organizations of Cyprus (OPOK) has condemned the government’s response to recent wildfires in the Limassol mountains, where two people lost their lives.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the group said the fires “cannot be extinguished with wishful thinking,” and criticized what it called a lack of accountability following the deadly blazes.

“Instead of hearing bold admissions and action plans for radical change, Parliament delivered yet another unacceptable display of self-congratulation and empty promises,” the federation said.

OPOK described the state’s handling of the fires as further proof of “chronic inadequacy and inertia” within the public administration, and called for urgent reforms to prevent future tragedies.
