FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Fire Department responded to 94 incidents involving firecrackers across the country during Easter celebrations, while a lit candle caused a kitchen fire in an apartment in Larnaca, officials said Sunday.

The fire destroyed kitchen equipment and filled the apartment with smoke.

The resident was hospitalized as a precaution for smoke inhalation. Authorities said the blaze likely started from the candle left unattended in the kitchen.

In total, 139 fires broke out in the last 24 hours, including 94 linked to the lambratties—a traditional Easter custom involving fire-lit celebrations.

Fire crews were dispatched to 42 fires in Nicosia, 16 in Limassol, 29 in Larnaca, three in Paphos, and two in Famagusta.

The Fire Department continues to urge the public to exercise caution during festive periods to prevent further incidents.
