Man Posed as Cyprus Electricity Technician in Jewellery Theft; Two Arrested

Police have arrested two men, aged 49 and 25, in connection with a deceptive jewellery theft reported in the Nicosia district.

The case was reported on January 31, 2026, by a local resident. According to the complainant, he received a phone call that afternoon from an unknown man who identified himself as a technician from the Cyprus Electricity Authority. The caller allegedly claimed he needed to check the electrical voltage in the complainant’s home.

Using the pretext that the jewellery inside the house could interfere with the voltage reading or cause further damage, the supposed technician instructed the complainant to gather his jewellery, place it in a bowl and leave it outside on the street. He was then told to return inside so the “inspection” could continue.

The complainant followed the instructions. Five minutes later, when he went back outside, the jewellery had been stolen.

Police investigations secured testimony implicating the two suspects. Court warrants were issued for their arrest, and both were taken into custody.

The pair appeared before the Nicosia District Court, which ordered them remanded for eight days.

The Nicosia CID Burglary Unit is investigating.
