FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A mobile desalination unit in Potima, Paphos, began operating this weeky to supply drinking water, according to local officials.

The head of the Paphos Water Users Association (EOA), Charalambos Pittokopitis, confirmed reports that some farmers have been illegally diverting water for irrigation.

Pittokopitis, who visited the site, said the unit’s timely launch was “fully satisfactory.” He acknowledged ongoing investigations into water theft, noting that at least one or two cases have been confirmed.

“Our data shows water is being stolen,” he said. “Instructions have been given to staff to immediately cut off illegal supply and file complaints with police so that appropriate legal action can be taken.”

The incident comes amid broader concerns over water levels in Cyprus’s reservoirs.
