Cyprus Opinion: Hepatitis Is Hiding in Plain Sight

ByFamagusta Gazette

Thousands of people in Cyprus may be living with hepatitis—without even knowing it.

That’s the frightening part. Hepatitis B and C don’t always show symptoms early on, which means many people walk around unaware, while the disease quietly damages their liver.

The truth? This is a preventable crisis.

We have the means to protect ourselves. Hepatitis B vaccines work. Early diagnosis can halt the disease before it leads to cirrhosis or cancer. Yet too many people face obstacles that have nothing to do with medicine—like stigma, lack of information, and uneven access to care.

These barriers cost lives.

It’s time to break the silence. Everyone should feel safe getting tested. Everyone should understand the power of prevention. And no one should be left behind simply because they didn’t know where to turn.

Hepatitis may be invisible, but our response shouldn’t be.
