Cyprus’ parliament on Thursday approved legislation allowing police officers to use body‑worn cameras and install recording devices in patrol vehicles.
The law sets out specific situations in which cameras may be activated, including arrests, searches, pursuits, responses to crime scenes and other high‑risk operations.
Officers must inform members of the public when recording, except in exceptional circumstances.
Footage from sensitive body searches will be subject to technical masking.
All recordings will be stored in encrypted form and kept for up to six months unless required for court proceedings.
Unauthorized use of the devices or illegal access to recorded material will constitute a criminal offense, carrying a penalty of up to three years in prison.
