The number of people employed in the wider public sector reached 78,388 in the first quarter of 2026, according to new data from the Statistical Service, Haravgi reported.
Of that total, 73,236 worked in general government — including civil servants, non‑profit organizations and local authorities. Another 5,152 were employed in government‑controlled companies and enterprises.
The paper said the civil service accounted for 55,354 employees, non‑profit bodies for 11,476, and local authorities for 6,406.
Employment in the wider public sector rose 1.8% compared with the first quarter of 2025, and 0.3% compared with the final quarter of 2025.
In a separate report, the paper said the number of registered unemployed reached 7,936 at the end of March 2026. There were 13,905 job vacancies in the first quarter.
Haravgi also reported that Cyprus remains below the EU average in employing recent graduates. While the EU average stands at 83%, the employment rate for 20‑ to 34‑year‑old recent graduates in the south is 82.3%.
