FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Traffic Department of Cyprus Police Headquarters will implement additional enforcement measures on the nation’s highways, with a particular focus on sections featuring three traffic lanes, officials said Tuesday.y.

Authorities plan intensified patrols targeting violations related to improper use of motorway lanes, including illegal overtaking from the left and misuse of designated lanes.

The move comes in response to an expected increase in road traffic in the coming days.

Police are urging drivers to exercise caution and comply with the Highway Code and traffic signage.

Improper lane use, especially on three-lane motorways, poses serious risks for collisions, officials warned.

Under current regulations, all motor vehicles must travel in the left lane. Use of the middle and right lanes is permitted only for overtaking or to allow vehicles to merge onto the motorway. Once overtaking is complete, drivers must return to the left lane.

Heavy vehicles, buses, and vehicles towing trailers are prohibited from using the rightmost lane. The emergency lane, marked by a continuous line, may only be used in cases of emergency.

Overtaking from the left lane is strictly prohibited. Violations related to improper lane use and illegal overtaking carry a fixed penalty of €65.

The Traffic Department continues its efforts to improve road safety through targeted enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
